This summer the Sherman Park area was active in organizing community activities to stand against gun violence.
39-year old Donnell Carter was shot by police during a stand-off at a local gas station. “I just feel like all the shooting, all the violence just need to stop. It's sad," said neighborhood resident Deondre White in a Journal Sentinel interview this summer. Later in that article, Sherman Park community activists noted improvements they were making in the community and showed hope that things would improve. As of last week, it seemed to be working. "Sherman Park is a great place to live. We have some of the best housing stock in the city of Milwaukee, and we need owner occupants in this community so we can curtail the negative things that happened last night,' Hamilton said. A few blocks away from W. North Ave, the corner of 51st and Chambers may suffer from a similar over-reporting problem. During the day spent outside, there was little activity and no evidence of crime infestation. However, since it is at the intersection of a middle school and hospital, it’s safe to assume that during its peak hours, 51st and Chambers is quite busy. Sherman Multicultural Arts School holds approximately 500 students from K3 to eighth grade. |
